Ever since I was small, I wondered why Abba commanded Moses and Joshua to take off their shoes in His presence.
Exodus 3:3-6
And Moses said, “I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.” And when Elohiym saw that he turned aside to see, Elohiym called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, “Moses, Moses.” And he said, “Here am I.” And He said, “Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.” Moreover He said, “I am the Elohiym of thy father, the Elohiym of Abraham, the Elohiym of Isaac, and the Elohiym of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon Elohiym.
Joshua 5:15
And the captain of the LORD's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
Of course, the simple answer I received from my parents was that it is a sign of respect in Abba’s presence.
Although this made sense, I still was not satisfied and would keep asking Holy Spirit for a deeper understanding because each time Holy Spirit encouraged me to take off my shoes during quiet times, this simple act of obedience would be spiritually pivotal to the occasion.
Finally, in the beginning of 2024, I started understanding the significance behind this gesture. But first, let me lay the foundation – the spiritual meaning behind feet and shoes.
Feet allow us to travel and to do what we have to do to make a living.
Abba also promised that we as the church would crush Satan using our feet because we have been commissioned through and in the authority of Yeshua under the guidance of Holy Spirit to build Abba’s kingdom wherever we go.
Genesis 3:15
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Romans 16:20
And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
Considering this, your feet are directly related to your daily routines, authority and calling as is stated in Joshua 1:3: Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.
Secondly, your shoes contain evidence of where you have gone throughout your day, and thus, also of what you did throughout your day.
In other words, shoes represent the vehicle by which you exercise your authority and calling in daily routines and business matters.
After providing me with this context, Holy Spirit started revealing to me that when we take off our shoes in Abba’s presence, we are prophetically laying down the cares of our lives and livelihoods to take hold of His kingdom, His Shalom, His appointment.
By releasing the worries of your daily affairs and laying them down at His feet, you acknowledge the supremacy of Abba’s Will in your doings. Taking off one’s shoes is an act of rededicating your walk and your calling to Abba and His purposes to enable you to, once you leave His presence, take up His authority to fulfill His will for your life.
Never underestimate the small prophetic acts that Holy Spirit presses upon your heart. A willing, obedient heart is key in walking with Abba and Yeshua.
Blessings,
Ruzeth
