Dearest Eves,
As we near the end of Bereshit (בְּרֵאשִׁית) (Genesis), we come across a powerful character within Abba’s Kingdom named Rīvqa (Rebekah). Her blueprint is quite special and a bit controversial as to what one would expect from a woman of intentional purpose.
The first husband to pray for his wife…
“And Yitsḥaq prayed to יהוה for his wife, because she was barren. And יהוה answered his prayer, and Rīvqa his wife conceived.” – Bereshit (Genesis) 25:21.
Here we see that a husband loved his wife to such an extent that he interceded to Abba on her behalf to bare a child. An earnest prayer was heard and Abba granted both of them their heart’s desire of having a child – not just one but two!
“And when the days were filled for her to give birth, and see, twins were in her womb!” - Bereshit (Genesis) 25:24.
Abba had a very specific purpose to blessing Rebekah with twins. Her sons were to become the fathers of two very big nations. The one nation being greater than the other nation. Abba’s intention for these twins were planner from the very beginning when He blessed Rebekah with them.
Rebekah’s struggle with her purpose in Abba’s Kingdom…
“And within her the children struggled together, and she said, “If all is right, why am I this way?” So she went to ask יהוה.” - Bereshit (Genesis) 25:22.
Rebekah could not understand why she was having such troubles with her pregnancy. So she went to the only one who would have answers for her – Abba. ften, we as Eves struggle to understand why Abba has placed us in a certain situation or why we have been tasked with a heavy responsibility. Personally, I think that it is the human/flesh in us. We try and do things within our human or worldly powers and don’t rely on the Holy Spirit and Abba’s direction. This tends to leave us uncertain about our purpose in His Kingdom. The only person who has answers for us is Abba Himself. We need to sit in Abba’s word and be present and persistent in prayer for Him to reveal His purpose for us.
When Rebekah sat in prayer with Abba, he revealed the following to her:
“And יהוה said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples shall be separated from your body. And one people shall be stronger than the other, and the older serve the younger.” - Bereshit (Genesis) 25:23.
Here we see that Abba was clear as to the twin’s future and the heavy responsibility placed on Rebekah to raise these boys as men of Abba’s kingdom who will one day become the heads of two powerful nations. Abba intended the youngest to take head of the Israelites which was a controversial thing in those days as we often see the eldest of the sons take the head of the family. Abba foreshadowed what will happen between these two nations – strife - from the time they were in Rebekah’s womb. How extraordinary it is to know that Abba has worked out every detail of a baby’s life from the womb he is currently in to the next generation.
Rebekah’s favouritism led to a flawed fulfilment in Abba’s intended purpose…
“And Yitsḥaq loved Ěsaw because he ate of his wild game, but Riḇqah loved Ya‛aqoḇ.” - Bereshit (Genesis) 25:28.
Rebekah favoured her youngest son. Therefore, always wanting the best for him. She held on to Abba’s promise for her children, but lacked the knowledge of the ‘bigger picture’ Abba had intended for her sons. She took things into her own hands – as we all do – and rushed Abba’s appointed time. The twins dealt with their birthright by themselves, but Rebekah urged Jacob (Ya‛aqoḇ) to deceive his father into having a special blessing – intended for Esau (Ěsaw) - spoken over him.
“And now my son, listen to my voice according to what I command you.” - Bereshit (Genesis) 27:8. Indirectly this deceit fulfilled Abba’s purpose as set out in Bereshit (Genesis) 25:23, but it also opened the door for much trouble in their family and caused a rift between the two brothers.
Rebekah’s blueprint…
Rebekah was a woman of Abba’s kingdom tasked with raising a double portion blessing – two sons. Given to her by Abba after an earnest prayer was heard. Uncertain of her motherly purpose she spoke to Abba and He gave her a clear glimpse of what the future for her sons will hold. Yet, she allowed herself to be blinded by favouritism for her youngest son. This favouritism led to deceit but it also led to the fulfilment of Abba’s intended purpose for Jacob to continue the Israelite linage.
Many times, dearest Eves we are faced with challenges that arrives with Abba’s purpose. Rebekah’s blueprint is quite a controversial one as we would not expect a lie and deceit to fulfil Abba’s purpose, but in this instance it has - Abba always works things for the good of those who love Him & who are called in accordance to His purpose. We must understand that Abba’s purpose is fulfilled in many ways and He knows every detail thereto.
Until next season…
Shalom,
Neréne
