“Charm is deceptive and prettiness vain, but a woman who fears יהוה is to be praised.” – Mishlĕ (Proverbs) 31:30 [The Sciptures Translation]
The Proverbs 31 woman is not an unreachable ideal, but a living example of what it means to walk closely with יהוה in every season of life. Her worth is described as “far more than rubies” (Mishlĕ 31:10), not because she has a perfect life, but because her life reflects the heart of her Creator.
She is a woman of diligence – “She shall seek wool and flax, and with delight she works with her hands” (v.13). She rises early, providing for her household (v.15), and makes wise decisions, using her resources with discernment (v.16). But her value is not only in what she does; it is in who she is. She is clothed with “strength and splendour” (v.25), not garments of the world, but the beauty of a life surrendered to God.
A true woman of God is known by her character. She “opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the Torah of loving-commitment” (v.26). She does not gossip or tear others down, but builds them up with truth and grace. Her kindness is not selective – she “stretches out her hands to the poor” and reaches those in need (v.20). She works hard in silence and speaks life with purpose.
In today’s culture, the pressure to conform is strong. The world tells women that beauty, status, and independence define their value. But the Proverbs 31 woman’s beauty comes from the fear of יהוה – a deep, reverent love and honour for Him above all else. This fear of יהוה is not about living in dread, but about aligning one’s heart to His will, trusting His wisdom, and living in obedience to His Word.
When a woman fears יהוה, her priorities shift. She understands that her home is a ministry, her work is a service, and her relationships are opportunities to reflect Messiah’s love. She invests in what is eternal, not fleeting. She knows that her identity is secure, not in the opinions of others, but in the One who perfectly and wonderfully formed her in the womb.
The Proverbs 31 woman is not perfect – but she is faithful. She relies on יהוה for strength when she is weak, wisdom when she is unsure, and peace when life feels overwhelming. She is not striving to impress, but to glorify Him. And in doing so, she becomes a light in her home, her community, and beyond.
May we, as women of God, pursue this calling daily. Let us clothe ourselves with righteousness, guard our words with wisdom, and extend our hands in compassion. Let us rise each morning with the resolve to serve Him first, knowing that in His sight, we are already precious and honoured.
“Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.” – Mishlĕ (Proverbs) 31:31
